A "Fare thee Well" to Luthier Doug Irwin: A lifelong inspiration to DeLuis Guitars

A "Fare thee Well" to Luthier Doug Irwin: A lifelong inspiration to DeLuis Guitars

RIP Doug Irwin ❤️

I first heard of Doug as a teenager, the guy who made Jerry’s guitars. A true legend. His work is part of the Grateful Dead’s sonic identity and an indelible piece of their visual iconography.

Like so many artists in the burgeoning San Francisco scene, the hive mind, the collective unconscious, was alive and ready, and Doug rose to the moment, creating instruments that would inspire fellow artist and musical icon Jerry Garcia. The rest is history.

I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Doug several times. He was always happy to talk guitars, quick with stories, he loved Jerry deeply, and his voice would crack when he spoke about him. He was also incredibly generous with his knowledge, even sharing original methodologies, like his brass securing techniques and the inlay materials he used on Wolf.

He believed in handwork, hand-cut inlay, the real thing. In a world that keeps moving toward automation, Doug and his work remind us of the value, both artistic and intrinsic, of true craftsmanship.

Thanks for everything, Doug. Rest easy.

P.S. Jerry’s been needing a new axe up there, and you’re just the guy 🙏
